St Fiacre is the patron saint of gardeners and taxi drivers, well i want t to have a wee chat with him about the thieving
taxi drivers in Portugal. plus they cannot read maps, perhaps he can get good old fiacre to set up a map reading programme and an honesty programme.
this am i thought i would get ahead of the game, nah, you should be so lucky.
First off brekkie was not served until 7.30, i pounded on the door, so subtle….
Then got a taxi five ks out, from the start, thought 24 was enough for one day.
driver dumped me off at the santarem railway station, should have caught a damn train…
never caught up with any camino markings until about 3 pm. had to ask etc etc, lotsa wrong turns, lotsa cursing and swearing from me. I just followed the road then, miraculously there was a Santiago sign, all proper not just a old yellow arrow on a cork tree in the middle of nowhere…found this miracle in a little town called Pombalinho, and golly gee there were lots more. Went past Broa famous for horses, they were nice, stallion on one side of the road, haring about and mares nickering away on the other…
temp by this stage was 30C…i was panting…asked an old guy for water, he had a nice garden so thought he would be OK, filled my bottle and then he barred the way off his porch, babbling away, not today jose, i could have knocked him down ,he only had one tooth and came to my shoulder… gave my school teacher snarl, no problem. Will ask women in future.
problem is nowhere to buy damn water and i had drunk well over a litre by this stage…
i now have arms and legs the color of corned beef despite sunscreen.
nice countryside but today it was corn and olives…
staying in a swish hacienda but sent out to eat at the local cafe, full of blokes…Only me and thirty horses staying at the hacienda….
tomorrow i am supposed to walk thirty ks from Golega where I am now with the horses to tomar.
think i may bus some of it….the day after is 31, not likely….not a taxi either unless fiacre does his goods, will be a bus or on foot…
weather is supposed to cool down on wed….
david, do bring Ts big hat, you will look a pillock but you wont get burnt round the face or neck!!!!
